Snowshoeing is a great way to get out an enjoy the winter season. Snowshoeing is easy – if you can walk, you can snowshoe – so it’s a great activity for beginners and people of all ages. Depending on your pace, it can also burn a ton of calories, so it can be a great workout.
Snowshoeing can make hiking in the winter easier. It is common to “post hole” in deep snow when hiking, or sink into the snow, which is why snowshoes are helpful. Snowshoes have a platform which allow you to walk on top rather than sinking into the snow. They make hiking in the snow a more enjoyable (and warmer!) experience.
Many magnificent hiking trails turn into snowshoe trails in the winter when they are snow covered. You can pretty much snowshoe anywhere there is a decent amount of snow. If the snow is hard packed, it may be fine to hike on without snowshoes, but deeper snow or a more recent snowfall can require snowshoes.
For your first time, or if you don’t own snowshoes, they are easy to rent from local outfitters. Many activity providers also provided guided snowshoe tours and treks to see some of the hidden gems of their area.
