HALEIWA WATER SPORTS – NORTH SHORE OAHU

Situated on the North Shore of Oahu is one of Hawaii’s most popular surfing and water sports destinations – Haleiwa. This renowned surfing hotspot is a 45 minute drive from Honolulu where you can find the raddest waves and biggest breaks on the island. The seven-mile stretch from Haleiwa to Sunset beach – also coined the ‘Seven Mile Miracle’- features world-class surfing spots like Waimea Bay, Pipeline, and Rocky Point. With more than twenty North Shore surfing locations around Haleiwa to visit, you’ll have an ideal place to surf whether you’re a beginner or an expert surfer.

SURFING

The long stretch of Pua’ena Point is known for its gentle rolling waves ideal for beginners to surfing. Family-friendly Kawela Bay is another option if you prefer small waves, and want some seclusion – it’s one of the most protected surfing areas in Haleiwa. Turtle Bay and Chuns are top choices for intermediate surfing. Many Haleiwa surfing sports are for surfers with years of experience riding the waves – surfing on places like Pipeline, Wai’mea, and Sunset Beach can be great places to watch the experts tackle the waves.

BEST TIME TO VISIT HALEIWA

The best time of year for Haleiwa surfing is from mid-April to early June, and September to mid-December.

KAYAKING & STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING (SUP)

The North Shore of Oahu is famous for their killer beaches, food, and waves. It can be difficult to choose just one location here, and we couldn’t!

You can opt to explore calmer waters with paddleboard and kayak tours and rentals. Discover Oahu’s beautiful scenery and fascinating wildlife in quiet ocean coves or the calmer waters of the Anahulu River. The Haleiwa sunset in itself is a famous attraction in the town – a kayak or a paddleboarding tour is one of the best ways to witness it. Haleiwa is best enjoyed on the water – whether it’s conquering the big waves, or getting up close to the community’s rich wildlife and scenic spots through kayaking and paddleboarding. Haleiwa’s proximity to Honolulu and Waikiki make it a great day trip option.

If you are looking for a quick paddle, short climb, and gorgeous views, go to the famous Chinaman’s Hat. Named after its shape, this is one of the most recognizable rock formations around the island. With more time, we recommend you paddle on over to the Kaneohe Bay Sand Bar for your own private beach. One of the most pristine, unspoiled places to take your SUP is Pua’ena Point Beach Park on the Northwest side of the island. Finally, for a different experience, explore the Anahulu River. This watercourse begins at the confluences of two streams, and then cascades 7 miles to empty into the ocean at Waialua Bay, Haleiwa.

Haleiwa is the heart of this region and a convenient place to rent gear for your Pacific Ocean adventure!

When you’re ready to take a break from the waves and head for land, take a North Shore hike to Kaunala or the Kaimmiland trails to take in views of the entire North Shore.
