Wheelies and Waves is passionate about providing top quality paddling equipment for exploring the spectacular lakes and rivers of the Crested Butte area.  The shop is located in downtown Crested Butte in the heart of the Colorado Rockies.

Crested Butte is nestled high up in the mountains and is home to many high alpine lakes and winding rivers that are perfect for a day paddle.  Crested Butte is also close to the largest body of water in Colorado, the Blue Mesa Reservoir.   Wheelies and Waves’ knowledgeable staff will help you choose the perfect location for your paddling adventure in the Crested Butte area.

Rental Information

They rent paddleboards (SUP), single and tandem kayaks, and river tubes.

All rentals include board/tube, paddle, pfd, leash and tie down straps.

Trail Info

Best Crested Butte Paddle Spots

Emerald Lake is in the Gothic Valley near Shofield Pass.  This high alpine lake at 10,000 feet can typically be accessed by vehicle starting in July once the snow melts.

Lost Lake and Lake Irwin are located on the Kebler Pass road.  They offer stunning views of the surrounding peaks and offer camping nearby.

Long Lake is in Washington Gulch and is a popular swimming spot.

Blue Mesa Reservoir is near Gunnison, and the largest body of water in Colorado.  There are endless coves to explore on this reservoir.

The Slate River flows through Crested Butte.  Popular put-ins are at Gunsight bridge and the Town Rec. Path, take out is at Skyland (Brush Creek Road Rec. Path).  The depth of the Slate River declines as the season progresses. Floating the Slate River is not advised after the end of July, although it’s best to check with us when picking up your equipment to find out what the depth is before departing.
