Porter’s Island Kayak Tour

Great for novices, families & those just wanting to get out on Lake Superior

Following basic kayak instruction on land (with some of the best kayaking guides in Michigan), test your new paddling skills on Lake Superior, surrounding Copper Harbor. Explore ancient rock shoreline, an uninhabited island and learn about the history of the largest, natural harbor on the Keweenaw Peninsula. On clear days the remnants of shipwreck can be sighted, while there’s always a lovely view of the Copper Harbor Lighthouse to take in. One billion years ago this was the site of large magma oceans and we have an opportunity to explore Earth’s largest lava outpourings, the deposition of what has become the world’s largest native copper deposit – history buffs, check out these national historical records related to the mining era and Porter’s Island.

Sunsets are a particularly special time to be on the Lake. Paddlers may bid farewell to the day as shades of vibrant changing color schemes highlight the sky as the sun drops into the freshwater sea.

Agate Harbor Kayaking Tour

Following a short shuttle drive down the scenic coast and a basic kayak instruction on land, test your new paddling skills on Lake Superior, in and around Agate Harbor. We’ll launch from a rocky beach and explore a chain of barrier islands, the “arch rock”, finger bays and view the spiny ridgelines that parallel the peninsula. On this Upper Peninsula Kayaking Tour you’ll navigate an area of the Keweenaw Peninsula that most closely resembles the shoreline of its sister rock, Isle Royale.

On calm water days, paddlers can view the remnants of the City of St. Joseph in about 20′-30’ of water. The 254′ barge was lost on the shallow reef during a northwest gale in September of 1942.

Bare Bluff Kayaking Tour

Following a half-hour shuttle drive down the scenic tunnel-of-trees off towards the white sandy shores of Lake Superior‘s Bete Gris, a basic kayak instruction on land will be provided. Upon launching, paddle below cliffs that tower up to 600′ above us and become awed by the Keweenaw Peninsula’s most spectacular scenery, on this spectacular adventure. We’ll explore sea caves and arches and sea stacks that rise up like pillars from the water. We can visit a historic fishery on-route to the mouth of the Montreal River where the discovery of one of the peninsula’s most scenic and remote waterfalls awaits us.

Q Do I need to make reservations for tours and rentals?

All tours and rentals require a reservation at least 24 hours in advance to guarantee availability. Walk-ins are welcome but we can't guarantee availability.

NOTE: The shop always try to accommodate reservations made less than 24 hours in advance, depending on availability of equipment and guides, if applicable.

Q Can I cancel/ reschedule my tour or lesson?

Payments are refundable, less a 15% cancellation fee any time prior to 24 hours of the scheduled tour or lesson. No refunds for cancellations made less than 24 hours of the scheduled tour or lesson. All sea kayak tours are subject to rescheduling, alternate destinations or cancellations due to wind, wave or other unfavorable weather conditions. While KAC will try to reschedule, full payments will be refunded in the event of tour cancellations due to unfavorable paddling conditions.

NOTE: Rain, fog or cool weather does not necessarily cancel a kayak trip. Customers often find paddling in the rain more enjoyable then they thought, since they are well protected from the elements by the kayak, spray skirt, wetsuit, lifejacket, rain jacket and hat and generate body heat as they paddle. KAC will not venture out in a heavy down pour or if thunderstorms are present.

Q When is Black Fly season?

Mid-to-late June and early July the bugs are not the best… That being said, when paddling out on the water or riding through the woods, the bugs have a hard time keeping up with you when you’re moving about!

Q What type of certifications do the staff have?

Your safety is always our number one priority, and we have an excellent safety record.

KCA's Sea Kayak guides have taken the Instructional Development Workshop through the American Canoe Association for coastal sea kayaking.

Senior kayak guides and overnight trip leaders have completed the Instructional Certification Exam for coastal sea kayaking.

KAC staff members have certification in CPR.

Some KAC staff have degrees in Outdoor Recreation and Management.

At the beginning of each season, employees undergo company staff training, 1-3 days in duration depending on their position, to prepare for the season.

Q Is there an age and weight requirement for sea kayaking?

Age Limits:

For our 2.5 hour, Porter’s Island/Sunset Paddle, there is no age limit, but participants must meet minimum weight limit of 80lbs and a maximum of 280lbs.

For our Half-Day Tours, Full-Day Tours and Overnight Trips youth must be a minimum of 12 years old.
Additionally, youth 15 years and younger are required to paddle in a tandem kayak for all our tours. NOTE: Youth rates are priced to reflect this requirement.

Weight/Size Limits:

There is a minimum of ~80lbs and a maximum of ~280lbs. Kayaks can be size discriminate and having a safe fit is largely dependant upon height and body shape, too. Large cockpits are 17 x 33 inches in size and elongated, so one must be able to comfortably fit into this space to have the freedom to get in and out of the cockpit.

Q What should I bring sea kayaking?

To ensure your sea kayak adventure is a good experience, KAC suggest that you bring the items listed below with you.

NOTE: Wet suits will be provided, and use is mandatory because of Lake Superior’s cold water and KAC provides them for all clients.

A synthetic top such as polyester, polypropylene or capaline. Fleece is great for cooler days or evenings. These materials are highly recommended to wear underneath your wetsuit as they dry quickly and have an insulating value even if they get wet. Cotton should be avoided.

Shorts or a swimsuit that a wetsuit can be slipped over.

Water-shoes or sandals. Participants can go barefoot if they do not have the appropriate footwear. Shoes with laces are not allowed!

Hat – for shade when it’s sunny. Cap – for warmth if it’s cool, especially in the Spring & Fall.

Sunglasses and Sunscreen

Drinking Water – at least 1 quart or more on ½ day & full day trips per person. A pint is sufficient for most people on the Porter’s Island Paddle.

Camera – take advantage of the many photo opportunities while on ‘da Big Lake! KAC guides have drybags available for your use, however participants assume their own risk for damaged or lost cameras.

Q Do you rent kayaks?

Yes, KAC rents out both touring sea kayaks and recreational sit-on-top kayaks. However, for sea kayak self-guided rentals, participants need to meet one of the following requirements:

Successfully complete our Fundamental Water Safety Course.

Exhibit experience with a “Test Out”, which successfully demonstrates a Wet-Exit, T-Rescue and Paddle-Float re-entry ($10 fee per person).

Provide a documentation, signed by an American Canoe Association (ACA) Certified Instructor, of having successfully completed a similar water safety course matching our course curriculum in the past 3 years.

The alternative to these requirements is to simply go on a guided tour where none of the aforementioned would apply. NOTE: Recreational sit-on-top kayak use is restricted to the area’s inland lakes with no pre-requisites needed prior.
